The Eudora Desoto Culinary is a class filled with kids from Eudora, Desoto, Mill Valley, and Wellsville. The program is designed to not only teach students how to cook, but about safety and sanitation laws, rules, and guidelines, used in the industry. Food preparation and safe handing is taught right from the beginning by both lectures and full scale kitchen laboratory. The students also learn about dietetics,nutritional information, professional equipment, running a business, restaurant design, custodial/janitorial services, customer service skills, and all the soft skills required for getting a job in the industry. Each student that takes this program is exposed to a number of different career opportunities, ranging from catering and chef positions to restaurant service and hospitality management. This program shows students what the correct uniform to wear in the kitchen and for interviews. Each student that takes this class will be involved in the Kansas/National Restaurant and Hospitality Association and the Prostart curriculum. The students completing this program earn a national certificate of achievement from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, along with a ServSafe certificate. The students could also qualify for college credit through established articulation agreements; state and national scholarships are also available.
